What began as a six-man sandlot football team in 1948 grew into a strong social group that lasted into the early fifties. In time, many other friends were made who were as close in friendship as the original group in the late forties and early fifties. While college, marriage and the Korean War all had a part in splintering the group, those smaller divisions of three or more continued to remain close. Whenever contact with the others was made years later we often referred to ourselves as the Mongrels. Although the reference was made with humor we realized it was also made with great pride.
