Mid-Century America was a unique time at the cusp of a great change that brought about the world we know today. The forties were the last decade before the automobile changed American cities. Within a decade public transit declined to little or nothing in most cities. Walking to the grocery store and other small shops became a thing of the past. New zoning separated residential from commercial causing the necessity of the automobile in order to live comfortably.
Mid-Century neighborhoods consisted of homes, grocery stores, drug stores with soda fountains, movie theaters, and many small shops. All were with walking distances for most inhabitants.
In 1948 we still had electric transit to Richardson and Plano along Matilda Street north to those outer cities. One could go most anywhere in Dallas on public transit either by electric streetcar or by bus yet it was to die within a decade. At great expense we are struggling to regain that mobility today.
It was in that Mid-Century world in Dallas’s Munger Place that a group of youths who called themselves Mongrels bonded into a unit that transcends fifty years.
This site is dedicated to the Mongrels as well as the efforts to the city to again develop walkable communities with mixed use developments following the guidelines as adopted by the Dallas Comprehensive Plan.
